Panda didn't clean up quite as thoroughly as Spyware Doctor, though, achieving 6.8 of 10 possible points for malware removal, compared to Spyware Doctor's 7.3. The antivirus scan detected 89 percent of my malware samples, the same as Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010. On making a non-signature detection, it puts the threat in temporary quarantine and submits it for analysis in the cloud. Panda uses heuristic scanning and advanced behavior-based scanning (called TruPrevent) to detect threats for which no malware signature exists. I always chose the delete option in testing. For lower-risk items like adware and "potentially unwanted programs," Panda asks whether to delete the program, block it from running, or ignore it, with an option to apply this action to any other low-risk items. Panda's scan automatically handles viruses and other high-risk items, disinfecting if possible, deleting if not. You can schedule scans at almost any interval: hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, even yearly! There's also an option to send remote notification when scans detect a virus. ![]() A full scan took about 35 minutes-on the slow side of average for my standard clean test system. Panda's scan progress window features an animated cloud, just to make sure you understand that collective intelligence in the cloud contributes to scan accuracy. Most users won't get impatient the way I did, but Panda should ensure that just one full scan runs at a time. ![]() Imagine my surprise on discovering each click had launched a scan! I had four separate scans running at one point. Malware made a couple of the systems sluggish enough that clicking "Scan all my computer" didn't seem to do anything, so I clicked it several times. Those minor problems solved, I moved on to full scans on each infested test system. The website provides access to PSCAN, the remote access client, support forums, and many useful security utilities. The other required full-scale remote access help. Technicians working through PSCAN fixed my first problem system. With very little user interaction required, it's a nice compromise between phone support and full remote control. When that didn't solve the problem, they supplied an interesting tool called PSCAN, which lets support technicians remotely gather information and push automatic fixes back to your computer. Tech support recommended scanning with the rescue CD. On one test system, malware derailed the installation process. Installation doesn't necessarily require a reboot, though on two systems it requested a reboot to complete disinfection of active malware. Panda installed without incident on 11 of my 13 malware-infested test systems. Overall, its independent test scores are impressive. Panda would have attained the top score of ADVANCED+ in both cases, but got dinged for false positives. In its most recent tests AV-Comparatives rated Panda ADVANCED both for on-demand malware cleanup and for proactive detection. ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs certify Panda for both detection and removal of malware threats. In AV-Test's two-month test of real-world protection last year Panda achieved the fourth-best overall protection rate, after Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 2010 ($39.95 direct, ), Norton, and Kaspersky. Only Norton AntiVirus 2010 ($39.99 direct, ) and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 equaled that score. Panda's 2010 product scored 5.0 or higher in all three tests, for a total score of 16. ![]() They rated each product on a scale from 1 to 6 in three areas: protection against infestation cleaning up infested systems and overall usability. German antivirus testing lab AV-Test has just released a study of real-world dynamic protection by 17 security products. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
